'Cow
Pie Rock' by
Steve Bonner
'Once again most
tourists, and indeed a fair few Barbadians, are unaware of the existence of
this spectacular scene. The cliff featured is the landward end of the same
coral layer as Pico Tenerife. Barbados, the most easterly of the
Windward Islands, is not volcanic in origin but a true coral island
and, year by year, is emerging from the Atlantic due to tectonic
pressure. Many thousands of years ago this
was the Barbados sea shore, it's now a hundred feet or so above sea level and
a quarter of a mile inland. You may recognise the undercut rock as resembling
those currently being eroded by the ocean at Bathsheba, and at St.Martins
Bay, a little further
down the east coast.' -SB.
